Interfaith Dialogues

Rissho Kosei Kai is dedicated to interfaith dialogue. We see this as a starting place to learn and understand our similarities ... hoping that together, we can build a bridge to world peace. Our sacred text is the Lotus Sutra. In this sutra (compilation of Buddha's teachings) are two important messages that relate to interfaith work.

First, is the teaching of the One Vehicle. In early Buddhist literature, there are three vehicles represented. These are three kinds of teachings representing differences and variety in human desires, capabilities, cultures, faiths, and ways of seeking truth.

In contrast, One Vehicle represents one great container which brings all living beings, without exception, to universal truth or enlightenment. One Vehicle signifies the absolute equality going beyond the relative differences. Thus, the teaching of the One Vehicle emphasizes that by respecting differences and diversity, we can all attain enlightenment. Universal Truth is available for every one of us. Each spriritual path is a human expression of this truth. For this reason, compassion and cooperation are of utmost importance. Rissho Kosei Kai has been involved in world-wide peace efforts for many years.

This leads us to the second important message of the Lotus Sutra - Bodhisattva practice. All living beings possess the potential for achieving enlightenment by remembering and completing ourselves. We call this Buddha - Nature. However, this only happens with positive thought, word, and above all, action. It is essential to practice the Bodhisattva way - the practice of compassion. In this way, we cultivate the fields of our minds and hearts to grow into a practice of caring about others. To become a person with a warm heart who is aware of the dignity in all forms of life. It is in this practice that we have implemented several humanitarian activities: Sending aid and supplies to those in need, psycho-social programs in war torn areas, promoting the "Donate a Meal" movement, by which we share in others' suffering by skipping a meal once a week and donating that food or money to those in need. It is most important also that as individuals, we actively involve ourselves in helping our families, friends, and community. Interfaith dialogue and cooperation for peace are opportunities to practice Buddha's teachings of respecting and understanding others, and of compassion as the Bodhisattva way.

WCRP (World Conference on Religion and Peace), and IARF (International Association for Religious Freedom) are interfaith groups that we are involved with on a regular basis. We have also been a part of the peace delegation for banning nuclear weapons.
